Students in the University of Vermont’s Wellness Environment are inviting the campus and the general public to celebrate wellness by joining them in an all-ages 5K walk/run at 4:20 p.m. on April 20.
In its fourth year, the event has already attracted more than 2,000 UVM students, staff and families from the greater Burlington area.
Registration is free, and the first 1,000 participants registered will receive a free long-sleeve race shirt designed for the event. The race course will begin and end at the Archie Post Athletic Complex on the south side of UVM’s Gucciardi Recreation & Fitness Center.
“The UVM WE 4/20 5K for Wellness is an opportunity for the campus and the community to vote for wellness by choosing to participate in a healthy activity on a day not known for healthy choices,” said Jim Hudziak M.D., a faculty member at UVM’s Larner College of Medicine and creator and Director of the WE program.
“The WE 5-K event is also meant to demonstrate that most students at UVM and the majority of residents of the city of Burlington and the state of Vermont are in favor of making healthy decisions every day of the year,” he said.
This year, the post-race event will feature free samples from local food trucks for all participants, along with music, an inflatable obstacle course and additional giveaways (weather permitting).
Information will also be available on health promotion strategies including mindfulness, nutrition and yoga, all of which are central to the WE model. UVM’s Wellness Environment has received national media attention for its innovative approach to showing the neuroscience of healthy behaviors and providing incentives for students to participate in them.
