WHERE: Chittenden County Regional Planning Commission
110 West Canal Street, Suite 202, Winooski, VT
WHEN: Monday, September 24, 2018, 1:30 – 3:30
Since its start in 2006, the Hunger Council of Chittenden County has helped to raise the community’s awareness of food insecurity and ways to strengthen the anti-hunger system. Over the past few months, Co-Chairs Amy Carmola and Travis Poulin met with Hunger Free Vermont’s leadership to strategize, and on Monday, September 24th, the Hunger Council will meet to review opportunities and set the group’s direction in the coming year.
The Hunger Council will be joined by Anore Horton, Hunger Free Vermont’s Executive Director. Council members will review some potential guiding documents, including those produced by the Operations sub-committee, and will discuss ways to strategically advance some important topics in the near and mid-term future.
Hunger Council meetings are open to anyone with an interest in combating food insecurity in their community. Launched in 2006, the Hunger Council of Chittenden County has had significant impact on the growth of federal nutrition programs feeding Vermonters, has supported federal and state legislation to protect and improve access to these safety net programs, and has helped to spread awareness about hunger in our communities. The Hunger Council meets quarterly; the next meeting will be on November 26, 2018.
About Hunger Free Vermont: Hunger Free Vermont is a statewide nonprofit organization that works with state agencies and community groups to end the injustice of hunger and malnutrition for all Vermonters. Since 1993 Hunger Free Vermont’s outreach programs have substantially enhanced Vermont’s nutrition safety net and increased access to nutritious foods. www.hungerfreevt.org
About the Hunger Councils: The Hunger Council of Chittenden County is one of ten Hunger Councils facilitated by Hunger Free Vermont. The Councils are groups of local leaders in Addison, Bennington, Chittenden, Franklin & Grand Isle, Rutland, and Washington Counties, the Lamoille Valley, the Northeast Kingdom, the Upper Valley, and the Windham Region, who are committed to learning about hunger and improving community and household food security. The Hunger Councils coordinate efforts and build strong nutrition safety nets at the community level and statewide. This project is a comprehensive approach to addressing hunger by educating community members about the local causes and effects of hunger and providing tools to improve nutrition and reduce hunger in their communities and beyond.
Membership in the Hunger Council of Chittenden County is open to anyone interested in learning about anti-hunger initiatives and taking action. If you would like to join, contact Jenna O’Donnell at [email protected] or visit https://www.hungerfreevt.org/hunger-council-of-chittenden-county/ .
