WHAT: Hunger Council of Chittenden County Meeting
WHERE: Chittenden County Regional Planning Commission
110 West Canal Street, Suite 202, Winooski, VT
WHEN: Monday, April 9, 2018, 1:30 – 3:30
During the first quarter of 2018, Vermont 2-1-1 received 25 calls for assistance with food programs in Chittenden County, and another 14 related specifically to SNAP or WIC. The emergency and charitable food system plays an important role in ensuring our neighbors’ access to healthy nutritious foods, and on Monday, April 9th, the Hunger Council of Chittenden County will meet with representatives of food shelves and food pantries across the county.
The Council will be joined by food shelf directors and volunteers from the Hinesburg Food Shelf, Sara Holbrook Community Center, the Westford Food Shelf, and the Winooski Food Shelf. These speakers have been asked to share any trends they’re seeing in their work, what goals they and their organization are working towards, and what else in the community is needed in order to make food insecurity rare and brief. The Council will also hear updates from the Vermont Interfaith Action sub-committee on the Rally Up for Restaurants initiative, and from the Operations Committee on their recent work.
Hunger Council membership is open to anyone with an interest in combating food insecurity in their community. Launched in 2006, the Hunger Council of Chittenden County has had significant impact on the growth of federal nutrition programs feeding Vermonters, has supported federal and state legislation to protect and improve access to these safety net programs, and has helped to spread awareness about hunger in our communities. The Hunger Council meets quarterly; the next meeting will be in late August/September, 2018.
About Hunger Free Vermont: Hunger Free Vermont is a statewide nonprofit organization that works with state agencies and community groups to end the injustice of hunger and malnutrition for all Vermonters. Since 1993 Hunger Free Vermont’s outreach programs have substantially enhanced Vermont’s nutrition safety net and increased access to nutritious foods. www.hungerfreevt.org
About the Hunger Councils: The Hunger Council of Chittenden County is one of ten Hunger Councils facilitated by Hunger Free Vermont. The Councils are groups of local leaders in Addison, Bennington, Chittenden, Franklin & Grand Isle, Rutland, and Washington Counties, the Lamoille Valley, the Northeast Kingdom, the Upper Valley, and the Windham Region, who are committed to learning about hunger and improving community and household food security. The Hunger Councils coordinate efforts and build strong nutrition safety nets at the community level and statewide. This project is a comprehensive approach to addressing hunger by educating community members about the local causes and effects of hunger and providing tools to improve nutrition and reduce hunger in their communities and beyond.
Membership in the Hunger Council of Chittenden County is open to anyone interested in learning about anti-hunger initiatives and taking action. If you would like to join, contact Jenna O’Donnell at [email protected] or visit https://www.hungerfreevt.org/hunger-council-of-chittenden-county/.
