Chittenden County Residents Join the Alzheimer’s Association to Inspire

Hope and Honor those Affected by Alzheimer’s on The Longest Day

WHAT: On Wednesday, June 21, 2017, Chittenden County residents will join

advocates around the world to participate in The Longest Day®, a day to

honor all those affected by Alzheimer’s disease. Held annually on the

summer solstice, The Longest Day symbolizes the challenging journey of those

living with Alzheimer’s disease and their caregivers.

The second annual Longest Day Rally on Church Street will bring together

volunteers, advocates, caregivers and Longest Day teams to help raise

awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. The Rally on

Church Street will be emceed by WJOY’s Ginny McGehee. Sara Byers, President

of Leonardo’s Pizza, is the featured Mission Speaker. She will address the

personal Alzheimer's journey of her step-father and mother and the impact

disease has had on her family. After Sara’s remarks, there will be a

special announcement from Kinney Drugs and the Alzheimer’s Association,

Vermont Chapter.

Local restaurants are showing their support for The Longest Day Rally on

Church Street. On June 21st, Leunig’s Bistro and Halvorson’s Upstreet

Café will donate 10% of dinner meal sales to the Alzheimer’s Association.

About Alzheimer’s Disease

More than 5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s, including an

estimated 12,000 Vermont residents, and as baby boomers age the number of

individuals living with Alzheimer’s will rapidly escalate. In total, 15.9

million family and friends provided 18.1 billion hours of unpaid care in 2015

to those with Alzheimer’s and other dementias, including 30,000 Vermonters

who provided an estimated 34 million hours of unpaid care.
