Reg Green – International Organ Donation Advocate
Reg Green:
Reg Green is the father of Nicholas Green, a seven-year old California boy who was shot while they were on a family vacation in Italy and whose organs and corneas were donated to seven very sick Italians, four of them teenagers. Nicholas is widely known as the world's most famous organ donor: in Italy alone organ donation rates in the following 10 years tripled. Nicolas was killed 22 years ago but scarcely a day has passed since then that he has not done something to try to spread the message that by a simple 'yes' people can probably do more to change the world for the better than at any other time in their lives. His website is www.nicholasgreen.org. Reg has traveled the world talking about what he has learned that could reduce the ever-lengthening waiting lists of people facing death that only a new organ is the only cure.
Vermont Organ Donation Stats:
For the first time VT have reached 12 months in a row of monthly organ and tissue donation registrations rates of over 50% The vast majority of individuals in VT (95%) register to be an organ and tissue donor at the state DMV (this is the case on all 50 states).
In 2016, over 1033 lives were saved here in New England because of the generosity of individuals who became organ donors. Thousands more lives were enhanced through the gift of tissue donation. With the need for life-saving transplants growing every day - over 118,500 patients are now on the US transplant wait list - it is crucial to educate our communities about taking action to register as donors.
