Cannabis on Campus the Subject of Fifth Annual College Symposium

Cannabis use on campus will be the featured subject of the Fifth Annual College Symposium being held this Friday, October 14 at Lyndon State College in Lyndonville.

The day-long conference is sponsored by the Vermont Department of Health and will explore the subtle and not so subtle ways use of cannabis - commonly known as marijuana - impacts the college environment and student learning.

Students, faculty, staff and community partners will hear and discuss the latest research on cannabis use, the "culture of cannabis on campus," and the influential role faculty have in mitigating student misuse of drugs and alcohol.

Preliminary results of the recent College Health Survey found that overall, 30 percent of Vermont college students reported having used marijuana in the last 30 days. Sixty percent of students reported using alcohol in that timeframe.

Nearly all the students who reported using marijuana smoked it at least once (95 percent). More than one in five students also reported using marijuana by dabbing, vaping or consuming it (e.g. brownies, cookies, candy).

Deputy Health Commissioner Tracy Dolan and Lyndon State College President Nolan Atkins will open the symposium, which features a keynote presentation from Amelia M. Arria, PhD, director of the Center on Young Adult Health & Development at the University of Maryland. Additional speakers include the University of Vermont's Tom Fontana, BASICS program coordinator and Lisa Schnell, associate professor and interim dean of the Honors College, as well as program staff from the Department of Health.
