South Burlington City Center Collaborative Announces Launch Event
A new organization invites the community to the SB3C Community Kickoff June 4
The South Burlington City Center Collaborative (SB3C) has announced that it is holding a community kickoff on Saturday, June 4th, from 9 to 11:30 am at City Hall on Dorset Street. The City Center Collaborative is a new, volunteer-driven organization created to enhance today’s South Burlington City Center through a collaborative community effort representing the interests of businesses, property owners, organizations, residents and institutions. The public is invited to attend this event to further the advancement of the downtown district. The event will include presentations by State and local experts on tactical urbanism, economic vitality and community building, as well as provide brainstorming opportunities to make City Center an exciting place to live, shop and invest.
The Collaborative’s mission is to support and promote a healthy, vibrant, bicycle- and pedestrian-friendly center of community activity that offers entertainment, shopping, services, and a gathering place for the community. Specifically, this non-profit corporation was organized to stimulate and support the City Center District as the downtown for South Burlington.
The City Center District includes both sides of Williston Road and reaches west to the Staples Center and Sheraton and east to Hinesburg Road; south down Dorset Street to include the University Mall and San Remo Drive and includes the land along Market and Garden Streets.
SB3C is closely following the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s “Main Street” model for thriving downtowns in partnership with the State of Vermont’s Downtown program. SB3C will focus on creating action teams in three key areas of successful downtowns: Promotion, Design, and Building Economic Vitality.
For Promotion, the Collaborative will work to create a positive identity for our City Center by promoting this area as an exciting place to live, shop and invest. This will involve the organization of events to be held in the City Center District.
For Design, the Collaborative will work to improve the appearance and welcoming nature of public and private space in the City Center District.
For Building Economic Vitality, the City Center Collaborative will work to encourage cooperation, create a supportive business environment and build sustainability in the business community.
Bob Britt, SB3C’s Board of Directors Chair, stated, “To date, the organization has created an organizing board and a set of by-laws. We are excited about the launch event because it will give the public the opportunity to be part of what is happening in the City Center District and to bring their ideas, talents and energy to bear on achieving the Collaborative’s mission.”
