Week of Dec. 28: UVM Police to Host Active Shooter Training, Dec 28

Week of Dec. 28: UVM Police to Host Active Shooter Training

University of Vermont Police will host an Active Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERRT) December 28 through the 31 in Lafayette Hall on the UVM campus.

The training is designed for police who are first responders to an active shooter situation and makes use of a comprehensive curriculum utilizing the most current police tactics and practices. The training also highlights scenarios that engage different police departments working together in response to active shooter incidents.

About 55 police officers from UVM and 17 municipal police departments across the state will participate. The training will take place between 8 and 4:30 each day and will alternate between classroom sessions and a variety of realistic scenarios that include an active shooter or shooters.

All the scenarios will take place within Lafayette Hall, with limited training work occurring just outside building. During the training, passersby may see unusual activity around Lafayette Hall, including numerous police vehicles and other emergency response equipment. All activity will be confined to the UVM campus, with no impact foreseen on surrounding neighborhoods. UVM is closed during the training.

The training will be conducted by five nationally certified police trainers -- three from UVM Police, one FBI trainer and one from the Colchester Police Department -- all of whom are certified ALERRT instructors.

The training is part of ongoing, multi-faceted emergency preparedness program at UVM managed by the University's Emergency Operations Group.

This is the second ALERRT Training that UVM Police has hosted since 2014.
