Credit Card Processing Changes Deadline for Retail Stores Approaching
MONTPELIER – Retail stores that accept credit cards will face increased liability beginning October 1, 2015 if they have not updated their credit card processing systems. The Vermont Retail & Grocers Association is reminding the state’s retailers of the upcoming October deadline of having the new chip & PIN payment processing systems. To help merchants understand their options, the association will be holding a free workshop on August 13 in Montpelier.
“The potential liability that a retailer will be exposed to without the upgrade to chip & PIN terminals on October 1 will be tremendous,” said Andrew Brewer of Onion River Sports in Montpelier. “I encourage all my fellow merchants to learn more about the changes so they can make plans now.”
The workshop will also include Ryan Kriger from the Vermont Attorney General’s office to share what your legal responsibilities are in the event of a security breach andexamples of breaches that have taken place in Vermont. Additionally, John Burton of Network Performance Inc. will explain how to take the needed steps to meet the new payment card industry standards to help you decrease the possibility of a credit card data breach.
The workshop will take place on Thursday, August 13, 1:00 pm at the VRGA office, 148 State Street, Montpelier. The sessions are complimentary to Vermont retailers, however pre-registration is required as space is limited: www.vtrga.org/events or 802-839-1928.
