Senator Patrick Leahy to visit Milton on Monday

MONDAY, MAY 11, 11:00 A.M.

MILTON ELEMENTARY/MIDDLE SCHOOL

42 HERRICK AVENUE, MILTON

(Please use Middle School entrance.   Parking in visitor lot across the street from the school.)

Senator Patrick Leahy, state officials and Vermont school nutrition advocates will hold a news conference to highlight Leahy’s Farm to School Act of 2015 as a key element of the upcoming reauthorization of the Healthy and Hunger Free Kids Act of 2010.  The legislation uses Vermont’s Farm to School program as a national model, linking local agriculture and the growing demand to provide healthy and nutritious meals to children.  The Leahy bill triples federal funding for farm to school programs and offers other programmatic improvements.  Following the news conference, Leahy will eat lunch in the school cafeteria with fifth grade students and tour the school’s kitchen facility.

Milton School Food Service Director Steve Marinelli and Milton students have twice visited the White House at the invitation of First Lady Michelle Obama to showcase the Milton Farm to School program.

In addition to Leahy and Marinelli, news conference participants will include Secretary of Agriculture Chuck Ross; Secretary of Education Rebecca Holcombe; Greg Soll, a local farmer who provides food to Milton schools; and Betsy Rosenbluth of VT-FEED, Northeast Regional Lead for the National Farm to School Network.
