“Trace Amounts” Film Tracks Mercury Dangers: Burlington Screening Marks National Autism Awareness Month
Burlington, VT, April 15, 2015—The frequency of autism in the U.S. over the past twenty years has skyrocketed from 1 in 10,000 to 1 in 68, and the scientific community is no closer to determining a cause. The new documentary, Trace Amounts, is the true story of Eric Gladen’s painful journey through mercury poisoning which he believes resulted from a mercury-containing tetanus shot he received at age twenty-nine.
Burlington-area mothers have organized a screening of this powerful documentary as part of National Autism Awareness Month. The film will be shown at Merrill’s Roxy Theater on Tuesday April 21st at 7p.m.
After recovering from a sickness that would bring him to the edge of despair, Eric Gladen began researching the science behind what had made him so sick. His research led him straight into one of the biggest medical debates of all time: the question of whether or not childhood vaccines are causing autism. He would end up quitting his career, moving into an RV, and traveling the country interviewing experts and piecing together thousands of studies and leaked documents. But Eric wasn’t focused on the vaccines themselves, he was focused on something that belongs nowhere near vaccines—mercury.
In spite of assurances from the CDC about the safety of mercury-based preservative Thimerosal®, Trace Amounts documents that the science is not yet settled about potential links between mercury-containing vaccines and neurological damage and autism. The United Nations recognizes that mercury is, “a substance producing significant adverse neurological and other health effects,” but mercury is still contained in certain flu vaccines widely distributed throughout the country, even in Vermont. Just this 2014/2015 flu season, the Vermont Vaccine Purchasing Program stocked 25,000 doses of Fluzone® multi-dose vaccines for children. According to the manufacturer, each 0.5 ml dose contains 25 mcg of mercury. As Trace Amounts details, this “small” amount of mercury can lead to devastating health outcomes.
Trace Amounts investigates mercury’s role in human health and its cumulative environmental effects, while exposing alleged corruption and cover-ups at the CDC. Humans have repeatedly seen the debilitating neurological and physical damage that mercury can cause, from the Mad Hatter Syndrome in the late 1800’s, to Pink Disease in the early 20th century, to the Iraqi Grain Incident in the early 1970’s, and the Minamata Bay disaster in Japan. Why and how did it end up in our childhood vaccines? Trace Amounts explores the origins of this policy and the continued greed-based decision to keep mercury in vaccines throughout several decades. The film is the result of nearly ten years of research and travel; in it, top scientists, government officials, parents of children with autism, and unsuspecting consumers unravel the truths, secrets, and tragedies, of the skyrocketing autism rates.
