Highly Acclaimed Documentary “The American Nurse” at Southern Vermont College

(BENNINGTON, Vt.) – A documentary film on “The American Nurse: Healing America” will be shown at Southern Vermont College (SVC) Thursday, April 2, at 6 p.m. in Everett Mansion’s Theatre. This presentation, sponsored by the Vermont State Nurses Association and co-hosted by SVC’s Division of Nursing and Southwestern Vermont Health Care, is free and open to the public. Following the film, Producer Lisa Frank will Skype in for questions and answers, and a reception will take place in Burgdorff Gallery.

The documentary premiered to sold-out crowds during National Nurses’ Week in 2014, and guests involved in the production appeared on the “Katie Couric Show.” Reports from top newspapers include “The New York Times” stating it’s “elegantly clear-eyed . . . a worthwhile documentary . . . Tears are almost inevitable”; “The Washington Post” stating “. . . mix of powerful images with words of men and women whose lives are devoted to healing”; and “The Dunham Herald-Sun” stating “A moving film about life and death, and those who care . . . beyond a must-see for those who are or have been nurses, ‘The American Nurse’ is an important piece of work for all Americans to watch, as everyone comes in contact with a nurse at some point in their lives.”

The film, lasting one- and one-half hours, is about five nurses from the book, “The American Nurse,” and their patients: Tonia Faust with maximum-security prison inmates, Jason Short with home health patients in Appalachia, Brian McMillion with soldiers returning from war, Naomi Cross with mothers giving birth and Sister Stephen with nursing home patients. Photographer Carolyn Jones and her team journeyed across the U.S. and recorded the nurses’ experiences.
