Vermont Tech to host 'Try a Major Day', April 18

Vermont Tech is excited to announce that on Friday, April 18th, the college will host a “Try a Major Day” for high school sophomores and juniors. Students will be able to walk in the footsteps of current Vermont Tech students and experience first-hand all that Vermont Tech has to offer on both Randolph Center and Williston Campuses.  The Vermont Tech academic programs taking part in the event include Aviation, Diversified Agriculture, Engineering Technology, IT & Computer Science, Nursing & Allied Health, Veterinary Technology, and more.

“This is not your typical ‘tour the campus day.’  It's a day when students will participate and interact with a major program they would like to try first-hand,” said Rosemary Distel, associate academic dean at Vermont Tech. “Try a Major Day is also the perfect opportunity for students to try out non-traditional by gender careers, such as women in engineering and men in allied health. We’re excited to introduce students to our expert faculty and talented current students so they have a chance to see what really fits.”

On both campuses, the programs will run from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m., including lunch.  Students may find out more and sign up/register by going to:  http://www.vtc.edu/tryamajor

Examples of the Try a Major Day offerings include:

  • Architectural and Building Engineering Technology – Interested in design? Want to learn what goes into creating first-rate, high-performance buildings?  Work alongside our current students and get a taste of mechanical/electrical systems, architecture, and how innovative materials are used in today’s building construction.   You’ll get up close and personal with cutting-edge, sustainable engineering challenges. (Randolph Center Campus)
  • Diesel Power Technology – We’ve got the power!  Join our Diesel Power Technology program while we check out student project vehicles being up-graded with various suspension and engine modifications, plus explore other in-lab projects. Perform a basic “voltage drop” electrical test; evaluate heavy duty truck battery; charging and starting systems; and make a 15 L. Caterpillar engine run on two cylinders by using a laptop. (Randolph Center Campus)
  • Electromechanical Engineering Technology - Interested in robots, electronics and programming?  Visit us at the Williston campus and see how engineering students spend their time. We'll have classes open to attend and labs to observe; you’ll get to see theory put into real practice. Current students will help guide you in robotic, electronic and programming exercises.  You’ll get a good feel for our give and take interactive classroom atmosphere where learning comes to life. (Williston Campus)
  • Equine Studies – Join our Vermont Tech Equine Studies program to learn basic musculoskeletal anatomy; perform a short equine sports massage session; observe, critique and devise solutions for positive change in the performance of a demo horse and rider team; participate in a training session in the round pen and briefly discuss equine behavior and psychology; and share with a question and answer session with a panel of current students. (Randolph Center Campus)
  • Renewable Energy - Solar, wind, and biomass! Renewable energy is an exciting and growing field. Come to Vermont Tech and learn about a program that prepares you with the technical skills to make a difference. Work with the renewable energy systems on our campus and install solar panels, measure wind power, and make a biofuel. (Randolph Center Campus)
  • Respiratory Therapy – Come learn to use a CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) “Manikin Dummy” to learn the right steps in delivering CPR. Students will practice the basic steps of CPR and intubation as they learn about the role of the Respiratory Therapist in emergency and critical care. (Williston Campus)
