CSWD earns approval of five-year Solid Waste Implementation Plan

Vermont Business Magazine CSWD has introduced its 2020 Solid Waste Implementation Plan, approved by the CSWD Board of Commissioners October 28, 2020, and the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources November 10, 2020. The SWIP, required by State statute, states how CSWD will meet specific Performance Standards outlined in the November, 2019, Vermont Materials Management Plan (MMP).

The MMP provides a statewide strategy for the management of waste, including a framework for the State and its citizens to prevent waste from being generated and to expand reuse, recycling, and composting efforts to attain Vermont’s statewide goals.

To achieve this, the MMP outlines actions that both ANR and Solid Waste Management Entities–districts, alliances, and independent towns–must take to reduce the amount and toxicity of solid waste in Vermont.

CSWD's SWIP includes information on how various waste streams are managed in Chittenden County; how members are and will be educated on waste prevention, reduction, and proper disposal; and how CSWD will meet the specific performance standards prescribed in the MMP through 2025.

Though the SWIP is a very thorough and specific document, it is by no means comprehensive. As we have since 1987 when we were created by our member Towns and Cities, CSWD intends to continue offering facilities, landfill-diversion programs, grant funding, research and technical support to our members that far exceed the MMP requirements.

In this season of thanks, the CSWD staff would like to express our gratitude for a Board of Commissioners and citizens who are among our country's most engaged and active in their support of waste and toxicity prevention and reduction.

The Chittenden Solid Waste District (CSWD) is a municipality created by our member Towns and Cities to reduce and manage the solid waste generated within Chittenden County in an environmentally sound, efficient, effective and economical manner.
