VBSR launches fund to support small business resilience

Vermont Business Magazine In response to the business disruptions and financial stress associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, Vermont Businesses for Social Responsibility announced today the creation of the VBSR Small Business Resiliency Fund, which will provide grants to small businesses in Vermont who demonstrate the ability to rebuild, sustain, and grow their operations through a “triple-bottom-line” focused on people, planet, and prosperity.

Grantees will receive cash awards of $10,000 and referrals to VBSR partner organizations offering financial and technical assistance, including business planning, working capital, impact assessment, marketing, e-commerce, and supply chain management. Partners organizations include the Center for Women and Enterprise, Vermont Small Business Development Center, and VSECU.

“We can create a stronger Vermont – one that is equitable, resilient, and sustainable - by providing targeted assistance to the values-led businesses that are the lifeblood of our communities,” says Roxanne Vought, Executive Director of VBSR. “Vermont’s long history of business innovation has proven that people-first, community-oriented, and sustainable business practices create economic, social, and environmental resilience.”

With leadership from Gardener’s Supply Company, Green Mountain Power, and Mascoma Bank, VBSR has set a goal to raise $65,000 for the VBSR Small Business Resiliency Fund. VBSR welcomes contributions in any amount from companies, nonprofit organizations, foundations, and individuals. Tax-deductible donations may be made securely here or by contacting VBSR.

“Gardener’s Supply Company knows that business can and must be a positive force for change, especially during this pandemic. As employee-owners, we are proud to support our employees, our customers, and the broader community. Our success is intertwined,” says Cindy Turcot, President of Gardener’s Supply Company. “We all want to live in a vibrant Vermont with diverse, creative and thriving businesses. It was an easy decision to support this fund and we are honored to be a part of it.”

Grant applicants may apply in one or more of the following categories: Local Food System, Downtown Vitality, Green Economy, Health & Wellness, and Social Change. Businesses led by People of Color, New Americans, women, veterans, individuals with disabilities, members of the LGBTQ community and individuals from diverse and often underrepresented populations are especially encouraged to apply. Grant eligibility, criteria, and application information will be made public in early November. Applications will be due Monday, November 16th.
