Acting Chief Jon Murad to Continue Serving until Police Chief Search Resumes in 2021
Vermont Business Magazine Today, Mayor Weinberger announced that Jennifer Morrison will not return to the Burlington Police Department as initially planned when she left to care for her husband in June. And while Morrison acknowledged that her husband's health is still on the mend, it is her negative reaction to the City Council and their budget cutting and general attitude toward the Police Department that is the primary reason for not returning.
In part, Morrison said, "I believe the Burlington City Council has created circumstances that are antithetical to public safety."
Her letter to Mayor Weinberger is below.
“I am grateful that Chief Morrison stepped in to assist the City during a very difficult time for the Burlington Police Department last winter,” said Mayor Weinberger. “I wish her and her family strength and support as they navigate through this challenging personal time. While I will miss Chief Morrison’s skill, can-do attitude, and her candor, I have great confidence that Chief Murad will continue to successfully lead the Department until a permanent chief is named, as he has since June.”
LETTER 9.6.2020

[WARNING]: External Message
Dear Mr. Mayor,
I have been holding onto this letter for a little while, waiting for the right time to send it. Specifically, I do not
want this letter to be incendiary at a time when there is already significant discord in the community. It is my
fervent hope that all relevant stakeholders will come together, without unattainable ultimatums, and work
toward meaningful policy and operational reforms regarding public safety.
The time has come, however, for me to send this and officially step away from Burlington PD. I know that
Deputy Chief Murad will do an outstanding job until a permanent chief has been hired.
All the best,
Jen
