Community Sailing Center pivots to provide childcare during crisis

Spring Adventure Sailing Camp for Those Impacted by COVID-19

Vermont Business Magazine In response to the ongoing health crisis, the Community Sailing Center (CSC) has adapted its existing youth programming to provide a Spring Adventure Sailing Camp, a child care resource for frontline COVID workers and families affected by school closures.

In line with their mission to provide lake access and life lessons, the program is a full day of care that combines indoor and outdoor time specifically tailored to abide by the state’s health and safety standards. Children will participate in sailing on 23 ft long keelboats and on land science activities. Each day will be balanced with time dedicated to the children’s school requirements.

“Each summer, many households with working parents consider day camps to be a critical child care resource for their kids while school is out. Whether it's tennis camp, farm camp or sailing camp, we all serve as a place for children to have an enriching and healthy experience while their parents are working. In these extraordinary circumstances, the Community Sailing Center is eager to provide the same type of support to essential personnel and families when they most need it,” said Executive Director Owen Milne.

The Spring Adventure Sailing Camp is available between May 25 - June 26 with its first full week exclusively catering to children of eligible essential workers. After June 1st the program will expand to include any families in our community seeking childcare.

The program will cater to ages 6-10 during the hours of 8 am to 5 pm on weekdays. Some families are eligible for financial support as essential workers via the State of Vermont . Direct subsidies to families during the week of May 25 - May 29 totals to $200 a week per child.

The CSC will be abiding by safety protocols including but not limited to staggered pick-up and drop-off for families, daily health screenings, and regular cleaning and disinfection of the building and boats. Groups will not exceed ten individuals including instructors. For continued safety of the staff and the children, the facility will otherwise remain closed to the general public.
