Vermont Business Magazine At his afternoon briefing on Friday, Mayor Miro Weinberger announced that, in consultation with the City Council and Police Commission, he has decided to suspend the search for a new Chief of Police for one year. This follows a search process to date that included soliciting input on the job description in January, posting the position publicly in February and receiving applications, and preparing to assemble a search committee in early March when the coronavirus hit.
“In our current circumstances, it is not possible to conduct the type of robust process that is necessary for the appointment of a permanent Police Chief, and it is very unclear when that will change. Further, if we to try to proceed nonetheless, the candidate pool would be impacted as no public service professional wants to abandon their post during a crisis,” said Mayor Weinberger. “Thankfully, we have an excellent interim option. Chief Jennifer Morrison has offered, and I have accepted, that she will continue as Interim Chief of Police following a period this summer when she will be away from the department, caring for her husband. Deputy Chief Jon Murad will serve as Acting Chief during her absence. During this extended transition, I am committed to continuing to make progress on the recommendations of the Special Committee to Review Policing Policies and other critical police initiatives.”
