VDH identifies new positive COVID-19 case through UVMMC

Patient is Under Home Care

Vermont Business Magazine One of the new positive cases of novel coronavirus, or COVID-19, announced today by the Vermont Department of Health, is a patient who was referred for testing to the University of Vermont Medical Center. The patient is self-quarantining at home.

The UVM Medical Center continues to evaluate and adapt to the situation, to ensure we can provide the highest quality care to patients and maintain a safe workspace for staff. We continue to remain up-to-date with current Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Vermont Department of Health guidelines.

The UVM Medical Center reminds the community that the best steps to prevent spread of COVID-19 are:

  • If you can, stay home.
  • Clean your hands frequently – wash your hands or use portable alcohol hand sanitizer before you eat.
  • Cough and sneeze into your arm, not your hands.
  • Don’t touch your face.
  • Avoid crowded spaces.
  • Avoid nonessential travel.

At this time, patients will be limited to two designated visitors who may visit throughout the course of their hospital stay. Until further notice, the following individuals are restricted from entering our facilities:

  • Those with any flu-like symptoms, including runny nose, fever, cough and respiratory congestion.
  • Those who have traveled to high-risk countries outside of the United States in the past 14 days.
  • Anyone who has had close contact with an individual who is being ruled out or was diagnosed with COVID-19.
  • Children under the age of 16.

The symptoms of COVID-19 are a cough, fever and/or shortness of breath – similar to the flu. If you have mild symptoms, you should stay home and rest. If you more severe symptoms, such as trouble breathing or inability to eat or drink, call your doctor right away. If you have been in a place where the virus is circulating, you should also call your primary care doctor to get advice. Do not go to Urgent Care or the Emergency Department unless you’re short of breath, or otherwise need urgent medical help.

Additional updates related to COVID-19 will be posted to our website at: www.uvmhealth.org/Pages/Coronavirus.aspx
