VMS taps new officers, presents awards and UVM medical student scholarship

Vermont Business Magazine The Vermont Medical Society (VMS) physician and physician assistant members met this month for the 209th VMS Annual meeting. Hosted in collaboration with the American Academy of Pediatrics Vermont Chapter, the Vermont Academy of Family Physicians, and the Vermont Psychiatric Association, this was the first in-person meeting since 2019. During the meeting, VMS members elected a new slate of 2023 Society officers, awarded the Mildred Reardon medical student scholarship and honored 2022 VMS Leadership awardees.

VMS members elected a new slate of officers for 2023 and named Ryan Sexton, M.D., emergency medicine physician and the Medical Director of the Emergency Department at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital (NVRH), as the new VMS President, Rebecca Bell, M.D., M.P.H., pediatric intensivist at University of Vermont Medical Center (UVMMC) and President of the American Academy of Pediatrics Vermont Chapter, as President-Elect, and Katherine Gamble Marvin, M.D., family physician and President of the Vermont Academy of Family Physicians, as Vice-President. VMS members also recognized seven individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the health and well-being of Vermonters and the nation during the past year. Edward C. Borrazzo, M.D., Associate Professor and Division Chief of General Surgery and Gastrointestinal Surgery at the University of Vermont Medical Center, received the Vermont Medical Society’s 2022 Distinguished Service Award. Both Jason Brazelton, M.D., a pathologist at Porter Medical Center who specializes in hematopathology, and Tim Lahey, M.D., an infectious disease physician and medical ethicist at the University of Vermont Medical Center, received the Vermont Medical Society's 2022 Physician of the Year Award. Kim Blake, M.D., an obstetrician-gynecologist and a fierce advocate for substance use prevention and treatment, received the Vermont Medical Society’s 2022 Physician Award for Community Services. Patsy Kelso, PhD, Vermont's State Epidemiologist for Infectious Diseases, and Megan Humphrey, the founder of Helping and Nurturing Diverse Seniors, or HANDS, were both awarded the Vermont Medical Society’s 2022 Citizen of the Year Award. Wendy Davis, M.D., pediatrician, and leader at the Vermont Child Improvement Program (VCHIP), received the Vermont Medical Society’s 2022 Founder’s Award. The Vermont Medical Society’s Education and Research Foundation (VMSERF) awarded a $10,000 scholarship to University of Vermont Larner College of Medicine student Nathaniel Moore. The scholarship was created to encourage young physicians to return to Vermont after completing their residency training and is named in honor of Dr. Mildred Reardon, a faculty member at the Larner College of Medicine at UVM.
