A $50,000 grant from AT&T is helping the Lyndon State College Television Studies (TVS) students develop a new media, convergence e-journalism extension of the Department of Television Studies award-winning News7 operation. The result is two web-based news projects - NewsLINC and the Vermont Broadband Report, both of which can be seen at www.news7newslinc.net.
The AT&T grant has allowed Lyndon to increase the breadth of experiences the TVS Department can offer students. Expanding onto the Web is an important step. With many newspapers facing financial difficulties and many of those closing, students are eager to learn the ropes for the burgeoni
NewsLINC offers advanced TVS students the opportunity to hone their newsgathering skills in a web-based environment, by producing stories collaboratively for the web site with fellow reporters and photographers from News 7. The goal of this initiative is to build and maintain a community eJournalism web site for the greater NEK community to use as a source for local news.
The Vermont Broadband Report is an ongoing research venture that delves into the challenges that Vermonters face in getting access to broadband Internet service.
This semester, NewsLINC is staffed by seven senior TVS majors and directed by Assistant Professor Meaghan Meachem and Director of Broadcast Operations Darlene Ballou.
The AT&T grant will also support the creation of a high school journalism day (J-day) at LSC and the leveraging of online tools to create greater integration between the College s News7 and KATV, the local public, education and government (PEG) television station.
