The Vermont Agency of Transportation will be closing Bridge # 81B on I-93 in Waterford on Tuesday, September 11, 2012. The bridge will be closed while the contractor replaces pavement, a waterproof membrane and the finger plate joint. The bridge is located at the on ramp from I-93 North to I-91 South at Exit 19 of I-91.
Traffic will be detoured north on I-91 to Exit 20, then south on US 5 and onto I-91 South at Exit 20. The entire detour is approximately 1 ½ - 1 3/4 miles in length. The bridge is expected to be closed for 30 days.
Replacement of the finger plate expansion joint will reduce the width of the bridge to 22 feet 8 inches during construction, rendering the bridge too narrow to ensure the safety of the traveling public and work crews. VTrans said in a statement that the closing may cause some inconvenience, but the safety of motorists and work crews was a major consideration in this decision.
