Vermont education secretary search committee appointed

Stephan Morse, chair of the Vermont State Board of Education (SBE), today announced the appointment of a committee charged with conducting a national search for the newSecretary of the Vermont Agency of Education. In making this announcement, Morse said, ‘This is an exciting time and opportunity to see education grow in Vermont. As chair of the SBE, I look forward to working with Governor Shumlin in this transition to a new state education agency.’
It is anticipated that current Education Commissioner Armando Vilaseca will be an applicant.
Board members appointed to the committee are: Bonnie Johnson-Aten, Montpelier; Brian Vachon, Middlesex; William Mathis, Goshen; and Morse, Newfane.
The committee’s charge will include the following:
· Post the position of Secretary of the Agency of Education
· Review applications
· Interview candidates
· Recommend three candidates to the full board forconsideration for recommendation to the Governor by January 1, 2013.
The timeline calls for the search committee to reach a decision by the Board’s December meeting.
Other associated duties of the committee will include the development of a proposed Board management structure, a Board budget, staffing for the Board and Board deadlines.
The committee will hold its first meeting on Tuesday, August 28, 2012, 3:30 p.m. at the Department of Education, 120 State Street, Montpelier.
