Vermont Tech launches first nursing program in Rutland geared to adult learners

On August 20, Vermont Tech launches the first Associate’s Degree in Nursing (ADN) program in Rutland specifically geared to meet the needs of adult learners. As a leading provider of nursing education in the state, Vermont Tech’s decision to open its eighth nursing campus was spurred by high demand from both adults seeking nursing degrees and medical offices and hospitals looking for well-prepared Vermont Tech graduates.
Classes will be held at the Stafford Technical Center at Rutland High School, under the umbrella of the Adult and Continuing Education Program.
‘We’re elated to extend our relationship with Vermont Technical College in yet another area that will provide quality education and training to students in Rutland County,’said William Lucci, Coordinator of Adult and Continuing Education Programs at Stafford Technical Center. ‘The ADN program joins an already established and well-respected menu of other courses, programs, and workforce development initiatives relied on by local employers like General Electric Aircraft Engines and the Rutland Regional Medical Center.’
Classes will be held via Vermont Interactive Technologies. Instructors are located in Randolph Center, and students across the state tune in through satellite sites. Students are able to view the instructor and each other, allowing interactive learning and discussions. All completed lectures are stored as podcasts on Vermont Tech’s online learning platform.
‘The Vermont Tech ADN program attracts mature students; the average age is 32,’said Kristin Husher, Site Director for the Extended Nursing Program at Rutland, St. Albans, Springfield, and White River Junction. ‘Many already hold bachelor’s degrees or advanced degrees in other areas, and are drawn by Vermont Tech’s commitment to the practical application of knowledge.’In the ADN program, Husher explained, students also benefit from the College’s strong partnerships with local health care agencies. In the Rutland area, students will complete clinical placements at sites including Mountain View Center Genesis Healthcare, Rutland Regional Medical Center, and Spring Lake Ranch Therapeutic Community, among others.
A reception and celebration of this new program in Rutland will be held on Monday, August 20th from 2 to 4 pm in the Dollhouse Restaurant, Stafford Technical Center’s full-service restaurant staffed by students in the Culinary Arts program. The event is open to the public.
