Informed Green Solutions (IGS), a non-profit organization based in Lyndon, has received an Innovator Award from the US Environmental Protection Agency for its outstanding role in promoting Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices in schools and other institutions. IPM methods help to reduce pest complaints and toxic pesticide use without long-term cost increases.
IGS educates the public and works in particular with schools and child care programs to inform them about the impacts on human health and the environment of products we buy for cleaning and pest control. IGS President Carol Westinghouse has held hundreds of workshops and training sessions with school staff, administrators, Head Start centers, and pre-school facilities and was instrumental in helping to pass Vermont’s Act 68, An Act Relating to the Protection of Students’Health by Requiring the Use of Safe Cleaning Products in Schools, this past legislative session.
‘I am honored and gratified to receive this award,’said Westinghouse, ‘but most important to me is knowing that IGS is playing a key role in helping to keep our children healthy.’
