Weekly unemployment claims fall 25 percent

Weekly unemployment claims fell 25.6 percent in the last week of May, returning to a relatively low level as seen earlier in May. For the week there were 720 new regular benefit claims for Unemployment Insurance in Vermont. This is a decrease of 248 claims from the week before, though 198 more than last year's total.

Altogether 7,237 new and continuing claims were filed, a decrease of 262 from a week ago and 1,045 fewer than a year ago. The Department also processed 1,453 First Tier claims for benefits under Emergency Unemployment Compensation, 2008 (EUC08), 35 more than a week ago. In addition, there were 704 Second Tier claims for benefits processed under the EUC08 program, which is 34 fewer than the week before. Vermont's unemployment rate fell two-tenths to 4.6 percent in April. This is the lowest rate in New England and fourth lowest in the US.
