Kilawatt Technologies is pleased to provide Vermont Mutual Insurance Group with a sophisticated evaluation of their data center at their Montpelier Vermont headquarters. Kilawatt was retained to assess the cooling efficiency of the data center and determine the most economical optimization strategies.
After monitoring the energy flow within their data center via the installation of 10 data loggers for a period of six weeks and statistically analyzing the results, Kilawatt Technologies reported the following:
1. There is approximately 72 percent reserve cooling capacity within the data center. Thus determining conclusively that additional cooling capacity was not needed.
2. The energy consumption for cooling the data center can be reduced by 50 percent through the implementation of a ducted cooling system with a sophisticated control package.
3. There is significant opportunity to utilize outside air cooling combined with energy recovery. This type of system will utilize outside air to cool the data center, drastically reducing the overall energy consumption while allowing the excess heat to be redirected into the building, when needed. This is a capital intensive solution that is still under evaluation. However the data center cooling system will be reconfigured to accommodate this solution at a future date.
