New England Youth Theatre receives $2,000 from People’s United Bank

Peopleâ s United Bank recently made a donation of $2,000 to New England Youth Theatre to support their â Rock Your Boat’School Tour about bullying.

Stephen Stearns, founder of the New England Youth Theatre, stressed his passionate belief that young people can run their own theatre with the guidance of theatre professionals.

â We strive to create an atmosphere of harmony and respect where students and adults can work together as equal creative spirits, fostering initiative, positive mental attitude, kindness and teamwork. We explore our creativity through a wide variety of dramatic media, exposing students to every aspect of theatre production. From acting to advertising, choreography to lighting, directing to designing, we cut capers on stage as we cut the platform legs that support it!And always, we have fun.

â The $2,000 grant from Peopleâ s United Bank supports the creation and touring of NEYTâ s March-April â Rock Your Boat’play about bullying among teen and pre-teen students. The program is also sponsored by the Windham Southeast Supervisory Union,’said Stearns.

â From the beginning I have wanted NEYT to be a place where kids could create and express themselves free of stigma and fear,’he continued. â Each member of this cast has contributed their own stories and experiences about bullying and how it has affected them. Their stories, and those from students in the four schools to which we will be touring over the next two weeks, comprise the improvisations from which this play has been written. All of the circumstances in the play are fictional, but the situations are typical of what each of the students has experienced in real life. I have coached the actors to be honest and to feel, as deeply as they can, the emotions that come up in these scenes. We hope that each school audience will give us their thoughts and opinions about our work.â

â We are pleased to be able to support New England Youth Theatre as they take on the â Rock Your Boat’Tour,’said Arne Hammarlund, Manager of Community Services, Peoples United Bank. â New England Youth Theatre is a great way to build self-confidence, imagination and an opportunity to make new friends.â
