Weekly unemployment claims in Vermont increased last week to their highest level in six weeks. In recent weeks they had fallen to their lowest levels since Troplica Storm Irene hit at the end of August. There was a second spike around New Year's, where they reached 2,000 new claims. By comparison, new claims last summer were running under 500. Last week there were 959 new regular benefit claims for Unemployment Insurance in Vermont last week. This is an increase of 243 from the week before and are 269 fewer than last year's total.
Altogether 10,139 new and continuing claims were filed, an increase of 192 from a week ago and 2,682 fewer than a year ago. The Department also processed 1,570 First Tier claims for benefits under Emergency Unemployment Compensation, 2008 (EUC08), 51 more than a week ago. In addition, there were 672 Second Tier claims for benefits processed under the EUC08 program, which is 20 more than the week before.
