The State of Vermont is awarding $57,000 in grant funding to nine communities dedicated to local historic preservation and restoration efforts. Twelve applications were awarded funding for the current fiscal year.
Federal funds through the National Park Service will be issued to nine municipalities under the State’s Certified Local Governments matching grant program. Award recipients include the Mad River Valley Planning District, which represents the towns of Fayston, Waitsfield and Warren, for its research about highland farming in the Mad River Valley; the Town of Norwich, for National Register nominations for the Beaver Meadow Historic District and the Root District School House; the Town of Shelburne will be updating their Historic Parade Ground Master Plan; Rockingham’s sponsorship of the Annual Historic Preservation Conference to be held in Wilmington, June 8, 2012; and, in the wake of Tropical Storm Irene, the Town of Hartford will be updating their State Historic Sites & Structure Survey.
‘We are privileged to have so many hard-working organizations and individuals preserving and championing Vermont’s history,’ said Gov. Peter Shumlin. ‘Their dedication to the past, present and future is what helps sustain Vermont’s unique spirit of tradition and progress.’
The Division for Historic Preservation awards at least ten percent of its Historic Preservation Fund federal appropriation to Vermont’s Certified Local Governments, which are municipalities that have partnered with the State of Vermont to identify, protect and promote historic resources.
‘All of this year’s grant recipients have demonstrated a clear vision on how to preserve and promote Vermont’s abundant historic resources, which is the core mission of this grant program,’ said State Historic Preservation Officer Giovanna Peebles of the Division for Historic Preservation. ‘Vermont is fortunate to have so many communities that are committed to honoring their local history.’
