Vermont State Colleges Chancellor Tim Donovan today announced the completion of a highly successful bidding process for network services in support of the five colleges in the VSC system.
The complex bidding process has led to preliminary agreements with Sovernet Communications, FairPoint Communications, Level 3 Communications, and VTel to provide next generation network services to Vermont State College campuses and academic centers across the state.
The agreements will provide the regionally dispersed locations of the VSC with nearly a ten ‘ fold increase in bandwidth and increased network redundancy. Over the last several semesters, students across the VSC indicated a strong desire for expanded bandwidth capacity.
‘Through the hard work of Vermont State Colleges Lead Network Analyst Tom Maguire, Chief Information Officer Linda Hilton and many others, the Vermont State Colleges have preliminary agreements which will ensure that bandwidth is not an obstacle to strategic initiatives at the colleges for the foreseeable future. And they’ve done it at a lower cost than current service,’ said Chancellor Donovan.
Recent public investments have helped improve the market of network providers in Vermont.
Chancellor Donovan praised Governor Peter Shumlin, noting: ‘Since we last bid network services three years ago, the state of Vermont’s investment in expanding fiber buildout across Vermont has created a market environment where significantly increased broadband service can be provided at level costs to clients like the VSC. We are fortunate to have a Governor committed to that effort.’
