CCV launches a MOOC: On the hunt for the perfect job

On September 30, 2013 the Community College of Vermont opened registration for its first LOOC, or little open online course. Titled On the Hunt for the Perfect Job, the course will teach students strategies and techniques useful in looking for, applying to, and interviewing for jobs.
On the Hunt for the Perfect Job is modeled after massive open online courses (MOOC), a model in which course materials and instruction are delivered to students free via the Internet. While MOOCs tend to attract tens of thousands of enrollees and are often associated with larger academic institutions, CCV doesn’t expect to see the course operate on that scale initially, hence the name LOOC.
Over the course of the five-week class, which officially begins on October 14, 2013, students will have available to them, free of charge, video lecturettes, reading materials, and online discussion forums. Completing the course will help students:
· Network skillfully with people who can connect students with job leads;
· Develop a professional image;
· Write polished cover letters and résumés that get results;
· Be at their best in an interview;
· Conduct a job search efficiently.
CCV’s Career Services team developed the course based in part on materials and resources the College has been creating and curating in its efforts to assist Vermonters with finding employment. CCV instructors Kelly Strunk and Kerri Brooks will teach On the Hunt for the Perfect Job, using discussion forums and other online tools to communicate regularly with participants.
