Weekly unemployment claims little changed through summer

New unemployment claims in Vermont were again under 500 last week. For the week of August 24 , 2013, there were 466 new, regular benefit claims for Unemployment Insurance in Vermont. This is an increase of 36 from the previous week's total, and 42 fewer than they were a year ago.
Altogether 5,218 new and continuing claims were filed, an increase of 85 from a week ago and 724 fewer than a year ago. The Department also processed 795 First Tier claims for benefits under Emergency Unemployment Compensation, 2008 (EUC08), 87 more than a week ago.
In addition, there were 19 Second Tier claims for benefits processed under the EUC08 program, which is one ore than the week before. The Tier III program of extended benefits is being discontinued in Vermont as the state's unemployment rate has been under the federal threshold for more than three months.
The total for all programs was 6,037 claims, 176 more than last week and 1,565 fewer than the same time last year.
