Weekly unemployment claims fall to under 600

New unemployment claims decreased substantially in Vermont last week, as filings have been up and down for most of the summer. For the week of July 13, 2013, there were 559 new, regular benefit claims for Unemployment Insurance in Vermont. This is a decrease of 468 from the previous week's total, and 11 fewer than they were a year ago.
Altogether 6,280 new and continuing claims were filed, an increase of 43 from a week ago and 356 fewer than a year ago. The Department also processed 817 First Tier claims for benefits under Emergency Unemployment Compensation, 2008 (EUC08), 43 more than a week ago.
In addition, there were 25 Second Tier claims for benefits processed under the EUC08 program, which is 1 more than the week before. The Tier III program of extended benefits is being discontinued in Vermont as the state's unemployment rate has been under the federal threshold for more than three months.
The total for all programs was 7,125 claims, 83 more than last week and 1,431 fewer than the same time last year.
