Weekly unemployment claims edged up for second week

New unemployment claims increased in Vermont last week for the second consecutive week, but remained at a relatively low level. For the week of June 15, 2013, there were 709 new, regular benefit claims for Unemployment Insurance in Vermont. This is an increase of 63 from the previous week's total, but 253 fewer than they were a year ago.
Altogether 6,013 new and continuing claims were filed, a decrease of 52 from a week ago and 537 fewer than a year ago. The Department also processed 769 First Tier claims for benefits under Emergency Unemployment Compensation, 2008 (EUC08), 12 fewer than a week ago.
In addition, there were 26 Second Tier claims for benefits processed under the EUC08 program, which is 2 fewer than the week before. The Tier III program of extended benefits is being discontinued in Vermont as the state's unemployment rate has been under the federal threshold for more than three months.
The total for all programs was 6,815 claims, 68 fewer than last week and 1,775 fewer than the same time last year.
