Vermont Homecare United files for largest union election in Vermont’s history

Homecare workers with the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees’(AFSCME) Vermont Homecare United will file a petition for an historic union election on Wednesday, May 29.
A press conference will be held at 11:00 a.m. at 155 State Street in Montpelier to kick-off the next step that homecare workers will take to build their union. After a short press conference, homecare providers will march a few blocks to the Vermont Labor Relations Board at 13 Baldwin Street to deliver the petition and thousands of signed support cards.
This homegrown effort started by providers seeking a voice in the workplace is the culmination of nearly three years of work, beginning with legislation passing both houses of the Vermont Legislature and recently being signed into law by Governor Shumlin.
Among those attending the press conference will be AFSCME International Secretary-Treasurer Laura Reyes, a former homecare provider who became active in her union and is now the second highest ranking officer in the international union.
