Shelburne Museum has been awarded two grants totaling $55,000 from the National Endowment for the Arts and People’ s United Bank. The grants support educational programming and a major new exhibition of art by NC, Andrew and Jamie Wyeth.
The National Endowment for the Arts awarded a $30,000 Art Works grant for the museum’ s innovative Passport to Learning program for school children in kindergarten through eighth grade, NEA Acting Chairman Joan Shigekawa announced today.
The museum is one of 817 nonprofit organizations nationwide selected from a pool of 1,547 eligible applications to receive an NEA Art Works grant.
‘ We are honored that the NEA chose to support Passport to Learning. The award comes at an especially opportune moment as the museum opens the new Center for Art and Education and begins to offer this unique, interactive arts program to school groups year-round,’ said Shelburne Museum Director of Education Karen Petersen.
Passport to Learning is a series of museum-based gallery workshops that link hands-on experiences to the museum's collections in ways that directly support school curricular goals and state standards. The program provides instruction to over 8,000 students from 105 Vermont schools annually.
Shelburne Museum Director Thomas Denenberg announced a grant of $25,000 from People’ s United Bank in support of the museum’ s upcoming exhibition Wyeth Vertigo, opening June 22. Wyeth Vertigo is the first exhibition in Vermont to feature all three generations of one of the most influential families in American art. Wyeth Vertigo explores the art of N.C., Andrew, and Jamie Wyeth through dozens of paintings by the three artists on loan from museums and private collections throughout the United States.
‘ Organizing this exhibition is a major undertaking that will bring some incredible work by the Wyeths to Vermont,’ Denenberg said. ‘ This support from People’ s United Bank is a great endorsement of education and the arts in our region.’
