PC Construction recognized for worksite wellness

PC Construction was recognized March 27 with a Worksite Wellness Award presented by Governor Peter Shumlin and the Vermont Governor’ s Council at the annual Vermont Worksite Wellness Conference.
The silver level award honors the company for its efforts to create an employee wellness program that focuses on increased employee health awareness and decreased absenteeism, employee turnover and health care costs.
In 2007, PC Construction engaged with Marathon Health to integrate a formal health and wellness program into its benefits package with the ultimate goal of increasing the health of the company’ s 900 employee-owners and achieving associated insurance cost savings. Biometric screenings, health coaching and other wellness activities are delivered on the job at no cost to the employee. Participants are rewarded for healthy activities with funds they can use to cover some of their health care costs.
‘ In the past year alone, we have seen a 17 percent decrease in cholesterol, a four percent reduction in obesity, and a 40 percent decrease in hypertension among employees,’ said Nancy Shambaugh, director of human resources. ‘ Our program focuses on preventive care for long-term health. We’ ve seen incredible success and employee engagement that has led to employees losing weight, quitting smoking, eating right and becoming fit.’
‘ Worksites that promote healthy eating, physical activity, tobacco use cessation and breastfeeding contribute to the overall health and wellness of all Vermonters," Vermont Health Commissioner Harry Chen said. "They are one of the key reasons we are routinely rated the nation’ s healthiest state.’
