At a State House ceremony tomorrow, Governor Peter Shumlin will take time to recognize the humanitarian work of the American Red Cross that is accomplished in communities across Vermont. With Red Cross leadership and volunteers at his side, the Governor will sign a proclamation declaring March as American Red Cross Month.
Over the past year, Red Cross blood services has collected over 45,000 units of blood and was successful in having Vermont join over 30 other states that allow 16 year olds to donate blood. On the disaster services side of their work, the American Red Cross is going out on more responses here in Vermont than any time in recent history while also providing support in other states in the wake of major disasters such as Hurricane Sandy. Additionally, each year, thousands of Vermonters receive Red Cross training in CPR, First Aid and other lifesaving skills and the organization actively supports members of the military and their families.
Prior to the proclamation signing, Red Cross disaster services is holding a recognition luncheon at the Capitol Plaza from 11:30 a.m. ‘ 1:00 p.m.. Red Cross leadership will honor the commitment and dedication of 30 volunteers from our region who deployed on national Red Cross assignments this year, 24 of whom went to New York and New Jersey in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. After Tropical Storm Irene, hundreds of Red Cross volunteers from across the country came to Vermont to help our response efforts. This past year, through these national assignments, the Vermont & the New Hampshire Upper Valley American Red Cross volunteers helped our state return that favor.
In addition to an invitation to the proclamation signing with the Governor, the media is welcome at this luncheon where our board chair, and nationally deployed disaster volunteer, Max Levy will give a brief presentation about his Sandy experience and will then join with Chief Response Officer Timothy Stetson to award certificates to our corps of nationally deployed volunteers.
