Weekly unemployment claims stay relatively low

New unemployment claims in Vermont fell slightly last week last week, but continue to trend lower than the earlier part of the winter and lower than for the same period last year. For the week of February 16, 2013, there were 692 new, regular benefit claims for Unemployment Insurance in Vermont. This is a decrease of 24 from the previous week's total, and 24 fewer than they were the same time last year.
Altogether 9,318 new and continuing claims were filed, a decrease of 67 from a week ago and 629 fewer than a year ago. The Department also processed 1,018 First Tier claims for benefits under Emergency Unemployment Compensation, 2008 (EUC08), 13 more than a week ago.
In addition, there were 48 Second Tier claims for benefits processed under the EUC08 program, which is 4 more than the week before. The Tier II program of extended benefits is being discontinued in Vermont as the state's unemployment rate has been under the federal threshold for more than three months.
