Weekly unemployment claims edge higher

Vermont Business MagazineNew unemployment claims in Vermont edged up last week and remain at a relatively low level. Levels this year have been running consistently lower than those of last year.Forthe week of September 20, 2014, there were 398 new, regular benefit claims for Unemployment Insurance in Vermont. This is an increase of 40 from the previous week's total, and 32 fewer than they were a year ago.

jobs, seasonally adjustedAltogether 3,613 new and continuing claims were filed, an increase of 65 from a week ago and 431 fewer than a year ago. The Department processed 3 First Tier claims for benefits under Emergency Unemployment Compensation, 2008 (EUC08), the same as the previous week.

There were no Second Tier claims for benefits processed under the EUC08 program. There were zero Tier III claims. The Tier I, II and III programs expired on December 28, 2013. Congress would need to act to renew these extended benefit programs.SEESTORY

The total for all programs was 3,616 claims, 65 more than last week, and 1,176 fewer than the same time last year.

Vermont's unemployment rate went up four-tenths to 4.1 percent in August, but still fifth lowest in the nation behind North Dakota 2.8 percent, Nebraska 3.6 percent, Utah 3.6 percent and South Dakota 3.6. percent.SEESTORY.
