Weekly unemployment claims edge up, stay under 500

Vermont Business MagazineNew unemployment claims in Vermont edged up again last week. Claims are typically low this time of year. They tend to rise in the transition from summer to back-to-school in early September. However, they remain under 500 as the school season begins. Levels this year have been running consistently lower than those of last year.Forthe week of September 6, 2014, there were 370 new, regular benefit claims for Unemployment Insurance in Vermont. This is an increase of 37 from the previous week's total, and 63 fewer than they were a year ago.

jobs, seasonally adjustedAltogether 3,687 new and continuing claims were filed, a decrease of 720 from a week ago and 554 fewer than a year ago. The Department processed zero First Tier claims for benefits under Emergency Unemployment Compensation, 2008 (EUC08), four fewer from the previous week.

There were no Second Tier claims for benefits processed under the EUC08 program. There were zero Tier III claims. The Tier I, II and III programs expired on December 28, 2013. Congress would need to act to renew these extended benefit programs.SEESTORY

The total for all programs was 3,687 claims, 724 fewer than last week, and 1,315 fewer than the same time last year.

Vermont's unemployment rate went up three-tenths to 3.7 percent in July, but still tied for fourth lowest in the nation behind only North Dakota 2.8 percent, Nebraska 3.6 percent, and Utah 3.6 percent; South Dakota is also 3.7 percent.SEESTORY.
