Veterans honored in Vermont

Vermont Business Magazine Senator Patrick Leahy (D-Vermont) issued this statement on Tuesday for Veterans Day: "It is fitting that on the eve ofVeteransDay, the Senate passed an annual VA funding bill that takes further steps toward fulfilling our commitment to those who have served and sacrificed for this nation, for each of us.There is much that is good in this bill.These budget gains are not enough, but they are an improvement, and they will make a difference.Budgets are a reflection of our priorities.Honoring our commitments to America’sveteransmust always be a top priority – every year, and always.OnVeteransDay, and on every other day, let us always pause to remember.Let us strive to honor and thank these brave men and women and their families for their sacrifices. And let us fulfill our own sacred obligation to care for them when they have returned home to us."

The truth is that we can never repay the debt that we owe to those men and women who put their lives on the line to defend our country. Our commitment to care for our veterans must extend to every day of the year – not just Veterans Day. We have a moral obligation to keep our promise to provide for the wounded and their families andensure that all veterans receive every benefit they have earned and deserve.”

Congressman Peter Welch (D-Vermont) will deliver remarks at noon at a ceremony to honor the service and sacrifice of America’sveterans during theVeteransDay Ceremonyi nWhite River Junction,at theVA Medical Center, 215 North Main Street.

Lieutenant Governor Phil Scott will deliver the keynote address at the LyndonvilleVeteransDay Ceremony at11 a.m.on Wednesday, November 11. The ceremony will be held in Memorial Park and is hosted by theVeteransof Foreign Wars Post 10038.

“As Americans, we owe our continued freedom to the brave men and women who serve and have served in our armed forces,” Scott said. “It would take multiple lifetimes to meet every singleveteranwho fought for our country, so it is our duty to remember the stories of those we do know – and pass them on.VeteransDay is an opportunity for us to come together in gratitude, but in my opinion we should ‘Thank a Vet’ every day; every day should beVeteransDay.”

Burlington Mayor Miro Weinberger, VFW Howard Plant Post 782, Vermont Air National Guard, and local leaders held a community celebration Day at 11 am at Battery Park.

The Norwich University Corps of Cadets paid tribute to all veterans on Tuesday with a special remembrance ceremony on the Upper Parade Ground.Highlighting the ceremony was guest speaker Brigadier General Gary WKeefe (Norwich ’86), chief of staff of the Massachusetts Air National Guard.The Veterans Day tribute at Norwich included nine minutes of cannon fire in the Roll of Wars and a firing of three rifle volleys.Photos by Mark Collier/Norwich University.
