State designates Putney Mountain Winery as Vermont Green Business

Vermont Business Magazine Putney Mountain Winery, located in Putney, has been named a Vermont Green Business by the state of Vermont for their environmental stewardship and sustainability efforts. The Vermont Green Business Program provides assistance to businesses desiring to “green up” their operations and recognizes businesses of all sizes for meeting a set of environmental standards. These standards are posted on the program websites (www.vbep.org).

In addition to participating in an environmental assessment, Putney Mountain Winery is: 100% solar powered, purchases all ingredients of its products from local family farms, composts all waste from its production, recycles as much as possible and pursues the myriad of details that go into committing our business to improving the environment.

The Vermont Green Business Program is a joint effort between the Department of Environmental Conservation and the Vermont Small Business Development Center and is voluntary and free of cost to participating businesses. Vermont businesses designated as Green Businesses are recognized for going beyond compliance with existing environmental regulations, using resource conservation strategies and implementation of environmental best management practices.
Putney Mountain Winery creates a dozen fruit wines, three sparkling juices and two liqueurs from produce they source at local family farms. Their wines have been awarded medals in regional, national and international competitions, including “Best Fruit Wine” at the BigE in Springfield, MA.

Kate and Charles Dodge moved all production from the basement of their Putney farmhouse to a space inside Putney’s Basketville Retail Store in 2008. Their wines are distributed throughout Vermont by Baker Distributing. They maintain year around tasting rooms in the Cabot Cheese Store in Quechee and Basketville in Putney.
