Vermont Business MagazineDomestic Violence agencies all around the country, including Women Helping Battered Women (WHBW) in Burlington, are gearing up for Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM). For the last 41 years WHBW has provided violence prevention and supportive services for those affected by domestic abuse in Chittenden County. This year’s events include:
The Perfect Victim Screening and Community Discussion
October 8th at 6:30pm, Main Street Landing Performing Arts Center Film House
"For over thirty years, three women have languished in Missouri State prison under unjust sentences for killing their abusive husbands. Denied the opportunity to enter the abuse into evidence, each of the women represents a system broken by outdated and media-sensationalized stereotypes." Join Vermont PBS, Main Street Landing Performing Arts Center Film House, the Chittenden County Domestic and Sexual Violence Task Force, Women Helping Battered Women, and the community to watch and discuss THE PERFECT VICTIM together.
South Burlington High School “Purple Out” – DVAM Soccer Game
October 13h at 4pm. South Burlington High School
The Clothesline Project
October 15th 10-3:30pm. Saint Michael’s College Green
Hosted by the Center for Women and Gender at St. Michael’s College, in collaboration with HOPE Works and Pride Center of Vermont SafeSpace, this event will feature statistics and awareness of survivors of domestic abuse served in our community this past year.
Refusing Silence: The Necessity of Voicing our Stories - Women Writing Vermont
October 24th 10-1:00pm
Sarah Bartlett and Women Writing VT presents an annual workshop, “Refusing Silence: Voicing our Stories” for any self-identified woman wanting space to explore, through word and image, her relationship to silence, voice and healing.
Candlelight Vigil and Survivor Speak Out
October 29th 6-8pm. Church Street, Burlington
This annual vigil starts at the bottom of Church Street in front of City Hall where survivors and community members hold a candle lighting ceremony to honor those who have lost their lives due to Domestic Violence. With candles in hand, participants then walk silently up Church Street to the Unitarian Universalist Church where those affected by domestic abuse have an opportunity to share their stories in a healing space.
These events and more are posted on the WHBW’s website Calendar of Events www.whbw.org. If you are interested in hosting an event or an awareness display, please contact our Educator and Youth Advocate, Emily Fredette at [email protected].
