At the invitation of Senator Patrick Leahy (D-Vermont), Federal Bureau of Investigation Director James Comey will visit Vermont Friday, April 24. Together, Leahy and Comey will tour the digital laboratory – the Leahy Center for Digital Investigation – at Champlain College in Burlington, Vermont. Champlain College President Don Laackman will join Leahy and Comey on the tour, which will be followed by a press availability.
The Leahy Center for Digital Investigation provides such services as data recovery, technical assistance for law enforcement professionals, analysis, organizational investigations, and research and development. The facility is an education, training, and information center and provides support to federal, state and local law enforcement organizations, as well as to public and private initiatives, involving cybercrime and digital forensics. It is supported by the U.S. Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Assistance; Champlain College; the Burlington Police Department; the Vermont State Police; and the Vermont Internet Crimes Task Force.
Leahy is the ranking and most senior member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, which has oversight of the FBI and Justice Department. In 2013 he chaired the hearings that resulted in the confirmation of Comey as the FBI’s seventh Director. Earlier this year, Comey accepted Leahy’s invitation to visit Vermont and to see firsthand the work being done at the Leahy Center for Digital Investigation.
