Burlington schools win national recognition for energy efficiency

Champlain Elementary School, CPSmith Elementary School, JJFlynn Elementary School and The Sustainability Academy at Lawrence Barnes have been named Vermont ENERGY STARschools. This achievement signifies that each school's efficiency is in the top 25% of schools in the Country and that it meets stringent U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards for healthy ventilation, year-round comfort and lighting quality.

These schools will be recognized at a public award ceremony in Montpelier onFebruary 20along with 20 otherVermontschools that have achieved ENERGY STAR designation this year. The ceremony will celebrate the continued success ofProject Green School, an initiative that aims to put allVermontschools on the path toward ENERGY STAR designation by 2020.

“This achievement reflects the commitment of our staff, faculty, students, administrators, and the many people who comprise a school community,” commented Marty Spaulding, Director of Property Services. “Together, we share a vision to forge a better school, to lower overhead costs, and to walk the walk of environmental stewardship in service to Vermont’s future: Our children.”

“The Burlington Electric Department is extremely proud that the Burlington School District is being recognized for ENERGY STAR designation this year,” said Chris Burns, Director of Energy Services at BED. “Over the past several years the School District has worked with BED on dozens of efficiency upgrade projects and they were very thoughtful about optimizing energy performance when renovating these schoolbuildings. Lowering over operating costs and providing a healthier learning and work environment is a big win for the Burlington community.”

Through the Project Green School partnership, Efficiency Vermont, the Burlington Electric Departmentand the Vermont Superintendents Association’s School Energy Management Program will continue to collaborate to help Vermont schools reach ENERGY STAR designation by addressing the energy use of lighting and facility systems–such as heating, ventilation and cooling – and the air-tightness of buildings. The initiative also will enable schools to use the energy improvement process to provideeducational opportunities to students and staff.

BED has been offering energy efficiency programs since 1989 and was appointed the Energy Efficiency Utility (EEU) for the City of Burlington in 2011 by the Vermont Public Service Board.Efficiency Vermont serves as the EEU for the rest of Vermont.
