In the summer of 2014, the Board of Directors of Vermont Electric Cooperative (VEC) adopted a program called the Community Fund. The Fund allows members to donate money to help local nonprofit organizations that support community development and economic security in VEC’s service territory. This concept underscores the cooperative principle of member helping member.
In February 2015, the Community Fund Committee, comprised of both directors and employees, met to review applications and make the first awards. An award of $500 was granted to Capstone Community Action in Morrisville to provide energy assistance grants to cooperative members. Another in-kind award of a computer and router was approved for the Johnson Historical Society.
Members can donate to the fund in three ways: by electing to “round up” their bills to the nearest dollar; by donating their patronage capital returns; or by making a direct contribution. Members who are interested in signing up for the round up or patronage capital donation options can contact VEC at1-800-832-2667.
“Rounding up to donate to the Community Fund is a simple and easy way to give back,” commented Tom Bailey, President of VEC’s Board of Directors. “VEC is proud to offer this option to members so that their small change can make a big difference for their communities.”
Community Fund grants will be awarded on a quarterly basis. Organizations can apply by submitting an online application or by requesting a paper copy. Second quarter applications are due byMarch 31, 2015. Interested organizations can visit VEC’s website for more information athttp://www.vermontelectric.coop/community-programs
