Vermont Business Magazine Continuing a long history of providing major support for key projects, the University of Vermont Medical Center Auxiliary announced today it is donating $1 million toward completion of the Robert E. and Holly D. Miller Building which will replace antiquated double-bed rooms with single-patient rooms. Patients in the Miller Building will experience enhanced quality of care due to the privacy, space for families and healing environment single-bed rooms provide. Currently, only about forty percent of rooms at the UVM Medical Center are private.
“This tremendous gift from the Auxiliary reflects its steadfast and essential support of the hospital over many decades,” said John Brumsted, M.D., chief executive officer, UVM Medical Center and president and chief executive officer, UVM Health Network.
“Whether it’s improvements like the new Mother-Baby Unit, providing teddy bears to children in the Emergency Department, or support for nursing education, the Auxiliary’s generosity has touched countless lives and we can’t thank them enough for being such a wonderful partner.”
"This generous support from the Auxiliary is allowing us to include a gym and other enhancements that will have a very positive impact on patients and families,” said Claude Nichols, M.D., chair, Orthopedics and Rehabilitation. “In addition to the 32 single-patient rooms, the Orthopedics floor will have a family room, a patient rehabilitation alcove, and a nourishment area.”
“The Miller Building is going to significantly enhance the experience that patients have at this already outstanding institution,” said Bernarda Echo, president of the Auxiliary. “We are thrilled to be able to support this project that will mean so much to so many in our region.”
The 200 members of the UVM Medical Center Auxiliary support the hospital’s mission through financial contributions and by providing services for patients, families and staff. The Auxiliary manages the hospital gift shop and Replays Resale Shop in South Burlington, and devotes the proceeds to a wide range of initiatives and projects. The Auxiliary is one of the largest all-time donors to the UVM Medical Center, with contributions totaling over $8 million.
The new building was dedicated in June in honor of Bob and Holly Miller, two well-known area philanthropists whose focus has been making life better for all members of the community. Completion is expected in the Fall of 2019. To date, $20.75 million has been donated from over 400 members of the community towards the $30 million fundraising goal for the project.
The Auxiliary’s largest fundraising event of the year, “Bushels of Baskets”, is being held on October 23rd at the Doubletree Hotel in South Burlington. For more information call Karen Robinson at (802) 878-2727.
