NEFCU donates $100,000 to new UVM Med Center inpatient building

Vermont Business Magazine New England Federal Credit Union is donating $100,000 toward completion of the Robert E and Holly D Miller Building at the University of Vermont Medical Center in Brlington, which will contain 128 new single-patient rooms. The hospital says patients in the Miller Building will experience enhanced quality of care due to the privacy, space for families, and healing environment single-bed rooms provide. The hospital says studies show that rooms designed with the needs of patients and families in mind result in better outcomes and a better experience overall. Currently, only 30 percent of patient rooms at the UVM Medical Center have one bed.

"Contributing to the communities we serve has been integral to NEFCU's mission since the credit union's inception,” said NEFCU president and CEO John J. Dwyer, Jr. “To that end we actively support education, events, programs, and facilities that enhance overall quality of life. Here, as elsewhere, state-of-the-art medical care is a critical component of community well-being and thus we are extremely pleased to help the University of Vermont Medical Center provide a patient and family experience that is as excellent as the care it delivers."

“We’re so grateful for NEFCU’s continuing generosity and support, and particularly for this donation to the Miller Building project,” said Eileen Whalen MHA, RN, president and chief operating officer of the UVM Medical Center.  “We simply could not bring this critically important improvement in patient care to life without the support of community-minded organizations like NEFCU.”

The University of Vermont Medical Center plans to open the $174.9 million building in the summer of 2019. There will be four patient floors, each containing 32 single-occupancy, medical-surgical rooms for a total of 128 inpatient rooms. There will be two floors of mechanical space, and a first floor will provide ambulance access to the Emergency Department entrance. There will not be any increase in the number of UVM Medical Center’s inpatient beds. Additionally, UVMMC has said that the project will not require any additional rate requests or increased revenue specifically to fund it.

NEFCU has been a generous donor to the UVM Medical Center for many years with a primary focus on the UVM Children’s Hospital. It is a key partner in the “Big Change Roundup for Kids” and a longtime supporter of the annual golf tournament fundraiser for the Children’s Hospital.  NEFCU also sponsored a room in the Mother-Baby Unit, which opened in 2015.
The NEFCU donation has helped the UVM Medical Center reach the $20.75 million mark toward its goal of raising $30 million from the community for the Miller Building. The inpatient building was dedicated in June in honor of Bob and Holly Miller, two well-known Vermont philanthropists whose focus has been making life better for all members of the community.  Completion is expected in the Fall of 2019.
